Continuing Care Nursery

A quiet, safe and comfortable space for newborns

Safe Sleep Bronze Award 2024
CHA is a Safe Sleep certified hospital.

We provide special care for newborn babies in their first few days of life - especially for babies born early or with certain medical problems.

If your baby needs special attention, our trusted and skilled pediatric hospitalist team and neonatologist can help. All our doctors have advanced training in the care of premature or sick babies and are on staff at both CHA and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

Our provider team attends high risk deliveries and works with our amazing nurses to care for the babies in our Level IB, Continuing Care Nursery. If your baby needs to stay in the nursery because they were born early or to address minor newborn issues like low blood sugars, mild respiratory distress, infection, or jaundice, our expert team will give them specialized care using state-of-the-art equipment in a quiet, safe and comfortable space.

Advanced Care

If your baby needs a higher level of care at a tertiary care nursery – NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit), we are able to quickly transfer them to our partner, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Babies often return to our nursery when they’re ready for a lower level of care and can get stronger closer to home.

Even if your baby doesn’t need to stay in the nursery, they may visit the nursery for routine screenings and treatments while you recover from your delivery. These may include well-baby screenings for hearing, congenital heart disease, and jaundice.

A Family-Centered Approach

As a part of your baby's care team, you'll be included while your baby is in our nursery. Here's what to expect:

  • Round the clock nursing care
  • Unlimited access to your baby
  • Meetings with doctors and nurses to discuss your child's health and care needs
  • Time with your baby's physician to talk about your baby's care plan and ask questions
  • Breastfeeding support with a lactation specialist to help you continue providing breast milk through your baby's stay
  • Direct phone access if you need to leave and call in for updates
  • Access to a robust interpreter support team
  • Continue bonding and enjoying skin-to-skin contact in a comfortable recliner

Prenatal Consultations

Sometimes parents find out about something unusual during their pregnancy and may want to know more about the special support CHA can provide after their baby is born. If you have questions about a diagnosis, delivering early, or something else related to your newborn, please speak with your provider about scheduling a time to connect with a member of the Continuing Care Nursery team.

Breastfeeding Support

Breastfeeding often takes practice and a little support can go a long way. Our lactation specialists have advanced certification in breastfeeding and our nurses are trained in breastfeeding support. They provide education, support, and problem-solving to help breastfeeding parents be successful. A member of your care team can schedule time with one of our lactation specialists during your stay on the unit.

Safe Sleep

CHA is committed to helping new parents learn about keeping babies safe while they sleep in their crib. Please explore the Safe Sleep website of the US Department of Health and Human Services, the National Institute of Health and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development for more information.
