Getting enough sleep is key to your health. Lack of restful sleep can affect your mood and energy level, and can also impact your heart and blood pressure if not treated.

CHA offers sleep medicine services through our Pulmonology team, who are experts in lungs and sleep, and our Otolaryngology team, who are ear, nose and throat surgeons.

Medical Tests and Treatments

The CHA Sleep Medicine team helps diagnose and treat a wide range of sleep problems.

Conditions Treated

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), insomnia, restless leg syndrome and other conditions.

About Sleep Tests

A sleep test is an overnight study to monitor your breathing, oxygen level, heart rate, movements, snoring and brain activity.

These tests are typically done at our Sleep Lab (33 Tower Street, Somerville), though some may be done at home.

Medical Treatments

After the test, you'll have a follow-up visit and get a treatment plan to help you sleep better. This may include:

  • Changes to your sleep habits
  • Behavioral techniques or cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Medication management
  • CPAP (positive airway pressure) therapy

About Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) Therapy

CPAP therapy is a sleep apnea treatment that uses compressed air to keep your airway open during sleep.

During sleep you wear a mask that's connected to a small machine. The machine gently blows air into your upper airway, keeping your throat open and allowing normal breathing.

CPAP therapy is safe and effective for most people. But if you have trouble wearing a PAP mask, we hold “mask clinics” each month to help choose the right mask for your face and to help with mask fittings.

Surgical Treatments

CHA's Ear, Nose and Throat surgeons offer a range of procedures to treat sleep apnea and reduce snoring.

Inspire Therapy for Sleep Apnea

While CPAP Therapy works for many people, studies have shown that about half of people with a CPAP eventually stop using it.

Inspire is an FDA-approved implant that can help people who are unable to use CPAP effectively.

It is a small device, about the size of a quarter, that is is implanted just beneath the skin. It works by stimulating the nerves of the tongue muscle, keeping the airway open during sleep.A diagram showing the Inspire Sleep apnea system

People with the Inspire device simply turn it on before bed using a small remove control.

The Inspire surgical procedure is quick and simple, and most patients go home the same day.
