Psychiatric Emergency Service

Alert: Some CHA centers and services will be closed during the Thanksgiving holiday. Please see this schedule for details.

Please note: always call 9-1-1 if you need medical help right away.

The Psychiatric Emergency Service (PES) provides expert, 24-hour care for people in severe behavioral and emotional distress. Located in the Emergency Department at CHA Cambridge Hospital, the PES serves people of all ages from across the Greater Boston region.

The PES provides a full range of emergency evaluations, interventions and referrals. Our philosophy is to stabilize patients and refer them to the least restrictive setting, keeping them in the community whenever possible. Most patients in crisis are referred to outpatient care or other alternative settings, but some patients are admitted to our hospital units if needed. There are psychiatrists and clinical social workers here 24-hours to help manage all acute mental health emergencies.

PES Service Overview

  • Immediate telephone response
  • Comprehensive evaluation
