Clinician-Led Research Groups

The Psychiatry Research Office also supports clinician-led research groups that conduct research and quality improvement projects that aim to understand how to improve the care of individuals with mental illness. The Psychosis Research Lab supports research by senior clinician-researchers as well as early stage investigators, focused on the recovery and maintenance of an improved quality of life for all individuals who experience symptoms of schizophrenia. The Bipolar Action Network (BAN) is a learning health system that CHA recently joined, focusing on improving the health and healthcare of individuals with bipolar disorder. The Population Health Research Group conducts interdisciplinary research and quality improvement projects to address barriers and facilitators of integrating measurement based care in mental health settings.

Psychosis Research Lab (PRL)

Photo of Dr. Lynn delisiThe Psychosis Research Lab conducts mixed methods and clinical research to better understand how to improve service delivery for individuals with serious mental illness, including those with psychosis. Led by Dr. Lynn DeLisi, the team conducts chart reviews, secondary data analysis, and qualitative interviews to assess patterns of care and identify socioeconomic and health system correlates that predict engagement in care. Dr. DeLisi also leads the Recovery in Shared Experience (RISE) clinic, devoted to the treatment of individuals with first episode psychosis. The RISE clinic is part of the Massachusetts Psychosis for Early Treatment Network (MAPNET) which contributes assessment data to the Early Psychosis Intervention Network (EPINET), a learning health care system for early psychosis. Several Psychosis Research Lab researchers lead projects using these data to better understand the treatment and experiences of patients with early psychosis. Other areas of research interest in this lab focus on the relationship between cannabis use and treatment for early psychosis and screening for risk of violence among these patients.

Bipolar Action Network (BAN)

The Bipolar Action Network is a Learning Health System, whose mission is to improve the health and healthcare of people with bipolar disorder. Through collaboration with multiple health systems across the US, the goal is to optimize care for bipolar disorder, supported by a cooperative network of people sharing knowledge, understanding, and support. Cambridge Health Alliance joined this network at the beginning of 2026, and is preparing to begin data analysis and use of the information for quality improvement in the psychiatry adult outpatient clinics.  BAN's longer-term goal is to grow and mature to the point where it can pool resources and data across its diverse member organizations and conduct research that advances outcomes for individuals with bipolar.

Lisa Rosenfeld, MD, MPH joined Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) in 2020. She is a practicing psychiatrist and the Medical Director of CHA's Adult Outpatient Psychiatry Department, which houses 10 interdisciplinary teams serving psychosocially complex patients with a wide range of mental health conditions. She currently serves as Clinical Lead for CHA's participation in the Bipolar Action Network, a multisite learning health network that brings together care centers, patients, families, and other stakeholders to improve care for individuals with bipolar disorder. Her clinical and operational work informs a research and quality improvement agenda focused on Measurement-Based Care and value-based health care in safety-net settings.

Gareth Parry, PhD, is a health services researcher and biostatistician specializing in the development of quality measures and the design and evaluation of large-scale healthcare improvement and implementation initiatives. He currently serves as a biostatistician in the Health Evaluation Research Lab at Cambridge Health Alliance's Department of Psychiatry. He also provides mentorship for early stage investigators around learning health systems and networks, improvement science, implementation science, and quantitative methods.

Population Health Research Group (PHRG)

The Population Health Research Group is a multidisciplinary and collaborative research and quality improvement group whose goal is to use mixed qualitative and quantitative methods to study the facilitators and barriers to implementing measurement based care in mental health treatment. In addition, the group increasingly works to examine the role of equity in both measurement based care and population health metrics related to psychiatric treatment.

Leadership:

Portrait of Margaret LancaMargaret Lanca, PhD, is Director of Neuropsychology and Cognitive Wellness and Director of Population Behavioral Health in the department of Psychiatry. Throughout her career, her clinical scholarship has focused on developing, evaluating, and implementing innovative approaches to neuropsychological and behavioral health assessment within real-world healthcare systems. A central focus of her work is advancing neuropsychology through a population health framework that emphasizes early identification, equitable access, and evidence-based assessment. Her research in first-episode psychosis (FEP) focuses on developing standardized approaches to clinical assessment and using measurement to better understand outcomes among individuals receiving coordinated specialty care. At CHA, she helps lead the implementation and evaluation of MBC across psychiatric settings, with particular attention to clinician and patient perspectives, implementation barriers and facilitators, workflow integration, health equity, and the use of patient-reported outcomes to inform clinical care.

Portrait of Kate ZonaKate Zona, PhD is a clinical psychologist at Cambridge Health Alliance and Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School.. In her role as Director of Measurement-Based Care (MBC), she advances the implementation of systematic assessment of patient symptoms and treatment progress across CHA’s Department of Psychiatry. As a member of the CHA Population Health Research Group, Dr. Zona studies facilitators and barriers to implementing MBC using mixed qualitative and quantitative implementation science methods. She is involved in examining equity-related issues in MBC, with the goal of ensuring that it benefits the diverse racial/ethnic and linguistic populations that CHA serves. Dr. Zona has participated in CHA’s Lean Six Sigma performance improvement methodology program, completing white, yellow, and green belt certifications with a focus on applying improvement science and change management principles to MBC implementation and enhancement.
