We recognize the importance of life-long learning. To support our nursing staff to adapt to a rapidly changing health care environment, the CHA Department of Nursing promotes ongoing staff development through:

  • Generous continuing education and tuition reimbursement programs
  • CNO scholarships for education in baccalaureate and higher degree programs
  • Unit-based clinical managers and educators that create environments that support continual learning and development
  • An orientation program for new nursing graduates and annual competency review for all staff
  • Certifications are available in ACLS, PALS and NRP; specialty certification compensation is available, e.g. CEN
  • Clinical Ladder professional development program
  • Daisy Award Recognition

Tuition Reimbursement

Many nurses use CHA’s generous tuition reimbursement benefit to complete certifications, attend trainings or work towards the completion of an advanced degree.

Permanent employees who work 20 hours or more per week in a benefit-eligible position can apply for tuition reimbursement after successfully completing six consecutive months of employment. Several CHA nurses are in the process of getting their Masters in Nursing degrees at local colleges and universities using this benefit.

Peri-Op 101

Cambridge Health Alliance Nursing

CHA offers cost-free Periop 101 courses to new Periop nursing employees to encourage their professional development and as an indicator of our commitment to quality. Nurses undergo 40 hours of training following a core curriculum of evidence-based education embracing the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices.

Nurses at CHA have the option to take courses through our partner Pro EMS as part of our commitment to continuing education. Pro EMS offers a number of courses in Ambulance and Rescue operations. Nurses also have the chance to ride along with an ambulance team to get a first-hand look at how medics respond to health alerts and emergencies.

Nurse Practice Council & Clinical Ladder Team

Nurses who are interested in developing their leadership skills and fostering innovation have many opportunities to get involved in collaborative work groups at CHA.

The Nurse Practice Council

The Nurse Practice Council is a representative committee of nurses from across all CHA departments and levels of experience who meet quarterly to discuss ways to elevate nursing practices at CHA. The council aspires to enact changes in policies and procedures to improve patient care. Nurses are nominated to the committee to represent their department and have an opportunity to network with other nurses from across the organization.

The CHA Clinical Ladder Council (CLC)

The CLC reports into the Staff Nurse Council. Its primary function is to provide a forum in which the expertise of nurses can influence and shape the clinical practice environment through the design and implementation of the Department of Nursing Clinical Ladder Program. The Clinical Ladder is a professional development program rooted in the principle that ongoing professional development of registered nurses not only benefits the individual nurse, but the patient, unit and the organization, and provides recognition for the RNs work to advance clinical practice.
