CHA Primary Care Physician Named 2020 Science Defender

Gaurab Basu, MD, MPH, co-director CHEEA was named a 2020 Science Defender by the Union of Concerned Scientists.

Gaurab Basu, MD, MPH, co-director of the Center for Health Equity Education & Advocacy (CHEEA) and a primary care physician at the CHA Somerville Campus, was named a 2020 Science Defender by the Union of Concerned Scientists for his advocacy work to address to air pollution, racism, poverty and climate change. The recognition is awarded each year to a small selection of individuals and groups who have taken a stand for science to protect the common good.

Dr. Basu has leveraged medical experience to write op-eds addressing these systemic problems and ensuring that conversations about COVID-19 also included the related issues of air pollution, racism, poverty and climate change. "We need to be a part of speaking up," he said. "Scientists and clinicians have to be leaders in our society, to make sure that science creates a society in which we care for one another."
