Assaad Sayah, MD, FACEPInterim Chief Executive Officer

Assaad Sayah, MD, FACEP

Assaad Sayah, MD, was appointed CHA’s Interim Chief Executive Officer in June 2019. Dr. Sayah previously served as Chief Medical Officer since 2013 and was Chief of Emergency Medicine and Senior Vice President of Primary Care at CHA. In the Emergency Department, Dr. Sayah has led tremendous advancements at all three CHA hospitals, resulting in enhanced efficiency, quality, volume and patient satisfaction. He also plays a key role in CHA's commitment to the communities it serves, including his tenure as the co-chair of the Cambridge City Manager's Opioid Working Group established in 2018 to develop recommendations for strengthening the city's response to the opioid epidemic.

When the National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems (now America's Essential Hospitals) publicized successful ED throughput strategies from top performing safety net hospitals throughout the country they honored CHA as a "high performer" candidate. After data was collected from two dozen member hospitals, CHA was identified as having promising practices to share with the greater hospital community. Since then, Dr. Sayah has been invited to share these strategies and accomplishments at national venues in Chicago, Denver, and San Diego.

Dr. Sayah has also served as Chairman of CHA's Chiefs Council and CHA Medical Staff President, and he continues to serve on the faculty at Harvard Medical School. His research and publications focus on Emergency Department Operation and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) including design of the EMS system, continuous quality improvement, advanced directives, violence and weapons, disaster planning, and pre-hospital thrombolytics.

He has received numerous awards for his work, including the President’s Award and Vanguard Award from the Massachusetts College of Emergency Physicians, the America's Top Physicians distinction in 2007 and 2008 from the Consumers Research Council of America, and the EMS Physician of the Year Award from the Metropolitan Boston EMS Council.

Prior to coming to CHA, Dr. Sayah served in leadership roles at several area hospitals, including as Director of EMS for Brigham and Women's Hospital, Associate Chief for the Department of Emergency Medicine at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, and Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center. He received his medical doctorate from the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and completed his residency in emergency medicine at William Beaumont Hospital in Michigan.

Renée KesslerExecutive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer

Renée Kessler

Renée Kessler joined CHA in 2014 as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, bringing a 25-year record of operations leadership experience. During her career, Renée has been a leader, mentor, and team player, achieving success in a range of large and complex hospital environments that care for vulnerable populations.

From 2007-2014, Renée served as Chief Operating Officer of Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital, a 683-bed urban teaching hospital in Nashville, TN. In this role she was responsible for all patient care operations, including quality and safety, staff and physician satisfaction, and overall budget, productivity, and cost performance. During her tenure, the hospital's operating margins grew from 5% to 8.6%. She also directed a four-year effort to achieve Voluntary Protection Program status through the Occupational Safety and Health Administration focused on employee safety, which was secured in 2012, making Saint Thomas Midtown the first Tennessee hospital and 14th in the United States to achieve this distinction.

Prior to her work in Nashville, Renée served as the Chief Operating Officer/Administrator at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair, NJ, a 350-bed community teaching hospital. She led a significant financial turnaround spurred by revenue enhancement and program growth that saw the hospital achieve break-even cash flow two years ahead of schedule. She also developed a strategic plan that resulted in program and volume growth and the recruitment of new physicians in various service lines.

Kessler earned her bachelor's degree in English from the University of Michigan and a master's degree in health care administration from Ohio State University.

Lynette Alberti, MSN, RN, NEA-BCChief Nursing Officer

Lynette Alberti, MSN, RN, NEA-BC

Lynette joined CHA in 2017 as chief nursing officer. She has over 30 years of experience in nursing leadership, service line development, strategic planning and administrative operations roles with organizations across the country. Lynette has responsibility for the provision of nursing services at CHA's three hospital campuses and its network of primary care and specialty care centers. Her career has focused on patient satisfaction, program development, Joint Commission readiness, Nursing Magnet designation and quality initiatives.

Prior to joining CHA, Ms. Alberti served as the administrative director at The Miriam Hospital, a 247-bed not-for-profit hospital, serving over 120,000 patients in Rhode Island. While at Miriam, Ms. Alberti led efforts to successfully enhance patient satisfaction, employee engagement and operational improvement initiatives. She also spent six years as a private consultant offering management and interim leadership services for healthcare institutions around the northeast.

Ms. Alberti holds a master's in Nursing Administration from the University of Maryland and received her bachelor's from Columbia Union College. She is certified through the ANCC as a Nursing executive, advanced.

Paul Allen, MD, MPHChief Quality Officer

Paul Allen, MD, MPH

Paul Allen, MD, joined CHA as the Chief Quality Officer in 2013. In this role he is responsible for quality management and improvement, regulatory affairs, infection prevention, risk management and pharmacy.

Dr. Allen has had a long prior history with CHA spanning approximately 16 years. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at CHA and then served as Chief Medical Resident. After his residency, he served in various leadership roles at CHA including Associate Director of the Residency Program in Internal Medicine, Director of the Medical Inpatient Units and Medical Director at Cambridge Hospital.

Dr. Allen had served as the Vice President of Medical Affairs at Steward Holy Family Hospital and Regional Vice President of Medical Affairs for Holy Family, Merrimack Valley Hospital and Nashoba Valley Medical Center. In these roles, he had responsibility for quality and performance improvement, medical staff services, care management, risk management, accreditation and regulatory affairs.

Dr. Allen earned a bachelor's from Boston College, a medical doctorate from Harvard Medical School, and a master's from the Harvard School of Public Health.

Jill BattyChief Financial Officer

Jill Batty

Jill Batty joined CHA as Chief Financial Officer in 2014. With more than 20 years of experience as a strategist, financial executive, and health care consultant, Ms. Batty has worked with a wide variety of providers, hospitals, and physician practices, including those in safety net and integrated health systems.

Prior to joining CHA, Ms. Batty served as Senior Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer of Cheshire Medical Center/Dartmouth-Hitchcock in Keene, New Hampshire. Her work there helped the organization transition from fee-for-service care to population health management, effectively adapting to state and federal reimbursement shifts while generating significant operating margin improvements.

Ms. Batty's mission-driven values extend beyond the workplace. She serves as a volunteer for several organizations including Monadnock Family Services and New Hampshire Voices for Health. She holds a bachelor's from the University of Illinois and a master's from the University of Iowa. She has been a certified public accountant since 1989 and is a fellow in the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

David Bor, MDChief Academic Officer

David Bor, MD

David Bor, MD, serves as the first ever Chief Academic Officer at CHA, working to strengthen the organization's teaching and research programs. He is also the Charles S. Davidson Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Bor served as CHA's Chief of Medicine for 21 years during which time he trained, mentored, and recruited hundreds of providers and leaders. Since joining CHA in 1981, Dr. Bor has made major contributions as a clinician, teacher, and administrative leader. This has included advancing patient care by spearheading new programs for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and community-based primary care. As the Chief of Medicine he recruited outstanding primary care and specialty teams. He also co-founded both the Cambridge "Health of the City" program and the Institute for Community Health, which have focused on childhood obesity, men's health, and substance abuse.

In the academic arena, Dr. Bor has worked with hundreds of young physicians, fostering an environment of learning, sharing, and innovation. These efforts have earned him the HMS Dean's Award for Community Service, the A. Clifford Barger Award for Excellence in Mentoring, and membership in the HMS Academy. He played a critical role in developing the academic relationships that CHA has with HMS, Harvard School of Public Health, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and Tufts University School of Medicine.

Dr. Bor's work includes helping create a new clinical practice model for CHA, the Patient- Centered Medical Home, which will improve both patient care and reduce medical costs. This effort is key to CHA's transformation to an Accountable Care Organization, furthering the vision that patient-centered, coordinated, high value care is not only possible but sustainable for CHA and its communities.

Mary CassessoChief Community Officer & President, CHA Foundation

Mary Cassesso

Mary Cassesso, who joined CHA in 2014 as Chief Community Officer and President of the CHA Foundation. She brings more than 25 years of executive experience in state and municipal government and higher education to the role. Ms. Cassesso, a lifelong Somerville resident, served for 10 years on CHA's Board of Trustees and as its chair for four. Her intimate connection to Somerville and her deep and longtime relationships with community organizations and municipal leaders were a significant asset to CHA during her tenure on the Board and will continue to be in her new position.

Her appointment reflects CHA's commitment to build and strengthen the CHA Foundation, the health system's principal fundraising entity, as well as its resolve to work collaboratively with the communities it serves to establish and sustain critical population health efforts. Ms. Cassesso plays a key role in implementing organizational strategic planning initiatives and oversees CHA's Department of Community Health Improvement, which provides a wide range of programs that reduce health disparities, promote wellness, and improve the lives of local residents.

Ms. Cassesso was previously the Assistant Secretary of Administration and Finance in the Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services, the state agency responsible for child welfare, disabilities, elder and veterans' affairs, public health, and insurance program MassHealth. She also served as the Dean of Administration and Finance at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Ms. Cassesso has devoted a lifetime of commitment to community and public service. She is active in numerous civic and charitable organizations and serves as chair of the Somerville Affordable Housing Trust Fund. She is a former chair of the Joint Committee on the Status of Women at Harvard Medical School (HMS) as well as a recipient of its Leadership Award, and she is also a past recipient HMS's Diversity Award. Ms. Cassesso holds both a master's in public administration and a bachelor's from Northeastern University.

Joy CurtisSenior Vice President, Human Resources Chief Human Resources Officer

Joy Curtis

Joy Curtis is a trusted advisor, coach, problem solver, and experienced human resources executive. She is the President and Founding Principal of the Human Resources consulting firm, Innovative Solutions HR, LLC. where she has worked extensively with clients in healthcare, higher education and professional services firms. Ms. Curtis founded Innovative Solutions HR, LLC. in 1994.

From 2005 until 2009, Ms. Curtis served as the Chief People Office at the international law firm, Ropes & Gray LLP where she founded “the People Organization.” She was responsible for firm- wide Professional development, legal recruiting, human resources operations, secretarial services, travel, event planning and support for the firm's pro bono activities. In 2009, the organization was voted the best firm to work by associates across the United States in the Vault Survey.

Prior to founding Innovative Solutions, Ms. Curtis was Vice President, Human Resources at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, CT, and at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, MA. She was a member of the Senior Management Teams and responsible for managing human capital. Ms. Curtis has over 25 years of in-depth experience in all aspects of human resources management.

Ms. Curtis earned her bachelor’s from Yale University and her Master in Business Administration, with high honors, from Boston University. She is a certified coach through Martha Beck, Inc. and is a certified Career Invention coach. She has earned the designation of Senior Professional, HR, (SPHR) from The Society of Human Resource Management.

In her spare time, she follows her passion for animals by working with animal rescue groups and is a founder and a member of the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Union for Siberian Huskies, Inc.

Samuel H. Doppelt, MDChief of Orthopaedics

Samuel H. Doppelt, MD

Sam Doppelt, MD, is a board certified Orthopaedic Surgeon and Chief of the Department of Orthopaedics at CHA, a position he has held since 1989.

After graduating from Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago, Dr. Doppelt completed his Orthopaedic residency at Wake County Hospital and North Carolina Memorial Hospital, where he served as Chief Resident. This was followed by a clinical and research fellowship in Metabolic Bone Disease at Massachusetts General Hospital.

At CHA, Dr. Doppelt has built a solid Orthopaedic service and has served on many major committees. This includes the Operative Services Management Committee, Medical Executive Committee, Credentials Committee and the Patient Care Improvement Committee. He also serves on the Medical Advisory Board of the Elder Services Plan and is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School.

On the national level, Dr. Doppelt has helped advance the field of tissue banking, having served on the Board of Directors of the American Tissue Services Foundation and as President of the American Association of Tissue Banks, which honored him with its 1997 Distinguished Service Award. He has also worked with the US Food and Drug Administration, serving on its Advisory Committees for Blood Products and Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy.

In addition to his clinical and administrative work, Dr. Doppelt has worked internationally as a volunteer Orthopaedic Surgeon and instructor in Peru and still serves on the International Advisory Board for the Korean Association of Tissue Banks.

Andrew M. FuquaGeneral Counsel

Andrew M. Fuqua

Andrew Fuqua has served as CHA’s Senior Vice President and General Counsel since 2013. Mr. Fuqua’s responsibilities include advising the Board of Trustees and all levels of management and staff on a broad range of health law and general corporate issues, including governance, regulatory compliance, contract, labor and employment, pension, tax, licensure, real estate, accreditation, insurance, patient care, and professional staff matters. Mr. Fuqua began his legal career as an associate at Choate, Hall & Stewart before joining CHA as Associate General Counsel in 2006. Before law school, he taught high school history. He is a graduate of Princeton University and the Boston University School of Law.

Greg Hagan, MDChief of Pediatrics

Greg Hagan, MD

Greg Hagan, MD, was named Chief of Pediatrics at CHA in 2014. He joined CHA in 2007 as a pediatrician at the Windsor Street Health Center and served as the Associate Director of Newborn Services from 2009-2013.

Dr. Hagan has been an advocate for improving the health of children through seamless coordination and integration of services. He has served on the oversight committee for the CHIPRA Strategic Advisory Committee, on the Executive Committee and Strategic Advisory Group for Massachusetts Child Health Quality Coalition, and numerous committees and task forces on the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He served as the President of the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics from 2010-2012.

Dr. Hagan serves as a Clinical Instructor for Pediatrics at Massachusetts General Hospital and is an Instructor in Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School.

Kathleen Harney, MDChief, Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology and Women's Health

Kathleen Harney, MD

Kathleen Harney, MD, is the chief of Obstetrics & Gynecology at CHA, a position she has held since 2003. In this capacity Dr. Harney provides physician leadership for the Cambridge and Somerville Women's Health Centers, ob/gyn practices at the East Cambridge Health Center and Revere Family Health Center, as well as the Labor and Delivery Suite and Birth Center at Cambridge Hospital. Dr. Harney sees patients at the Cambridge Women's Health Center.

Dr. Harney joined CHA in 1999, initially as the director of pediatric and adolescent gynecology. Prior to that she was an attending physician in the Division of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology at Tufts Medical Center.

Dr. Harney is a graduate of the Tufts University School of Medicine, and received her bachelor's from Harvard University. She received her ob/gyn training at the Tufts-New England Medical Center combined program in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Brian Herrick, MDChief Information Officer

Brian Herrick, MD

Brian Herrick, MD, was named CHA’s Chief Information Officer in 2019. Dr. Herrick first joined CHA in 2010 as the Senior Director of Clinical Informatics and became Chief Medical Information Officer in 2012. As the senior physician responsible for overseeing the IT department’s collaboration with patients, clinicians, operations, quality, compliance and researchers, he has played an essential part in improving patient quality and provider satisfaction with the clinical tools they depend on.

His accomplishments including launching a number of new features in CHA’s MyChart patient portal, which gives patients active in the system better control to manage their health, and guiding CHA through the many stages of Meaningful Use, ensuring that the organization has achieved the highest level of payments from this incentive program. He has also worked with regional healthcare leaders to create a standard in the Epic function Care Everywhere to promote inter-organizational information exchange to benefit patient care.

Dr. Herrick completed his medical degree at Dartmouth Medical School, family medicine residency at the University of Rochester, a fellowship in faculty development at the University of California at San Francisco and a certificate in biomedical informatics from Oregon Health and Science University. He completed his board certification in clinical informatics in 2017.

Carol Hulka, MDChief of Radiology

Carol Hulka, MD

Since 2001, Dr. Carol Hulka has been Chief of the Department of Radiology at CHA, and Associate Clinical Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Hulka received her bachelor’s from Brown University and her medical doctorate from Duke University. She completed her medical internship at Beth Israel Hospital and trained as a resident in Radiology at the Brigham and Women's Hospital. Dr. Hulka was an Imaging Fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital. She remained on staff at Massachusetts General Hospital for several years where she published in the field of women's imaging. She initiated and developed the Breast MRI program at MGH for which she was awarded state and federal grant funding.

During her staff appointment at BIDMC, she completed her Master of Business Administration at Boston University, where she was selected for membership in the Beta Gamma Sigma Society for academic achievement. Dr. Hulka had the opportunity to use this education when offered the position of Chief of Radiology at CHA. Since that time, she has expanded the professional practice from the CHA Cambridge Hospital site to include CHA Somerville Hospital and CHA Everett Hospital. Dr. Hulka has overseen transformation of the department to a state-of-the-art facility that is 100% digital (PACS) and paperless, using voice recognition for instant report turnaround. It was one of the first facilities in the area to have digital mammography at all sites and in 2009 was named a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology.

Dr. Hulka remains active in many Radiologic Societies with roles as Past President of several imaging societies and as a reviewer of scientific presentations and journals. She continues to support radiology education programs with the Harvard Medical School students and rotating residents.

Joe Mackey, MDChief of Anesthesia

Joe Mackey, MD

Joe Mackey, MA, was named CHA’s chief of anesthesia in 2015. Since joining CHA, Dr. Mackey has been instrumental in orchestrating a seamless transition of the service. He continues to focus on improving the efficiency of the OR, particularly on-time surgical starts and seamless team communication, which are initiatives tightly linked to patient experience of care and staff satisfaction.

Dr. Mackey is an anesthesiologist with Anaesthesia Associates of Massachusetts, PC. Prior to joining CHA, he served as the director of anesthesia for Boston Medical Center’s Moakley Ambulatory Surgery Center and also served as the chairman for the Department of Anesthesia at Saints Memorial Medical Center from 2005-2007.

Kirsten Meisinger, MDPresident of the Medical Staff

Kirsten Meisinger, MD

Kirsten Meisinger, MD, attended Brown University as an undergraduate, received her medical doctorate from Case Western Reserve University and completed a family medicine residency training program at the Greater Lawrence Family Health Center. She came to CHA in 1999 and has worked as a primary care physician seeing patients at the CHA Union Square Family Health in Somerville. Dr. Meisinger became medical director of the center in 2008 and was later named regional medical director for CHA primary care sites in Cambridge and Somerville.

The CHA Union Square Family Health Center is a QUALIS and PCMHI certified medical home that earned NCQA Medical Home level 3 Recognition in October 2010 and again in 2013 and 2016. In 2012, Union Square was selected as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation LEAP practice - one of the top 30 ambulatory care sites in the United States.

Dr. Meisinger is core faculty at FELUMA in the "Pos-Graduacao Em Gestao de Atencao Primaria Em Saude," a CHA-Unimed course designing patient-centered medical homes in Brazil. She has faculty appointments at Tufts University and Harvard Medical School, and is core faculty at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. Dr. Meisinger was recently appointed national co-chair of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' "Transforming Clinical Practice Initiative." In this role, she will oversee a national program to promote the patient- centered medical home model and team-based primary care and coach various systems as they transform to value-based care.

She speaks fluent Portuguese, Spanish and French. Dr. Meisinger likes caring for living creatures in her home life as well, and lives in Arlington with her husband and three children, a dog, and a huge garden.

Ben Milligan, MDChief of Emergency Medicine

Ben Milligan, MD

Benjamin Milligan, MD, was named Chief of Emergency Medicine in 2015. Dr. Milligan joined CHA in 2008 as an attending physician at CHA Cambridge Hospital. He became the associate site chief of emergency medicine for Cambridge and Somerville Hospitals in 2012 and then was promoted to site chief for both sites in 2013.

Throughout his tenure, Dr. Milligan has shown a great commitment to quality care for CHA’s patients, leading initiatives focused on improving patient safety and enhancing quality in emergency medicine. He has also played an important role in helping maintain the high patient satisfaction scores that keep CHA’s ED consistently ranked among the top in Massachusetts in publicly reported quality measures. CHA’s ED, the fifth largest in the state, serves nearly 100,000 patients annually, with wait times that average around five minutes.

Prior to joining CHA, Dr. Milligan was a clinical instructor at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University and an attending physician at the Miriam Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. He graduated from the Weill Cornell Medical College (Cornell University) and completed his emergency medicine residency at New York University/Bellevue Hospital Center.

Rebecca Osgood, MDChief of Pathology

Rebecca Osgood, MD

Rebecca Osgood, MD, is Chief of Pathology at CHA. She has been part of CHA for 27 years and has contributed greatly to the Department's work including initiating the project of electronic reporting of reportable infectious diseases to the MADPH from Microbiology Laboratory and bringing molecular infectious disease testing to CHA providers. Dr. Osgood has provided outstanding oversight of the Somerville Hospital laboratory services, the Microbiology section of CHA laboratories, and has served as Medical Director of the Spaulding Hospital Cambridge Clinical Laboratories. She is also currently the Medical Director of MIT Health Services Clinical Laboratory. Dr. Osgood is an Instructor in Pathology at Harvard Medical School. She is a Clinical Associate in Pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital. Prior to joining CHA, Dr. Osgood was the Medical Director of Microbiology at Beth Israel Hospital.

Dr. Osgood serves on the Executive Board of the Massachusetts Society of Pathologists and is a representative of the House of Delegates for the College of American Pathologists. Dr. Osgood is part of the Global Pathology group at the Massachusetts General Hospital. She is a member of the College of American Pathologists, Massachusetts Society of Pathologists, the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, and the American Society of Cytology. Dr. Osgood interests are infectious disease pathology and cytopathology. Dr. Osgood is dedicated to providing excellent pathology and laboratory services to providers and the patients of the CHA community.

Outside CHA, Dr. Osgood is the mother of four children and married to an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Thomas Hoerner. She has participated in many community projects. She has volunteered her services as a pathologist along with her husband with Health Volunteers Overseas, a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to improving the availability and quality of health care through training and education. With this organization, she has worked in Cambodia, Tanzania, and Costa Rica.

Dr. Osgood is a graduate of the Weil Cornell Medical College and completed her pathology residency training at MGH. She received her bachelor’s from Smith College and graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa.

Richard Pels, MDChief of Medicine

Richard Pels, MD

Richard Pels, MD, was appointed to the position of Chief of Medicine at CHA in 2017. Dr. Pels has been with CHA since 1983, serving in numerous leadership roles including associate chief of medicine, president of the medical staff, director of the Internal Medicine Residency program, director of graduate medical education and most recently, interim Chief of Medicine.

Dr. Pels graduated summa cum laude from Duke University and received his medical doctorate from the University of Florida. He completed primary care internal medicine residency training at CHA and fellowship training in general medicine and medical education at Harvard Medical School. His special interest areas are refugee health, chronic pain and medical education. Dr. Pels is the recipient of many prizes and awards including the A. Clifford Barger Excellence in Mentoring Award at HMS, CHA’s Medical Staff Lifetime Achievement Award and the Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

David PorellChief Administrative Officer, CHA Physician Organization

David Porell

For more than 20 years, David J. Porell has held senior management roles in both academic and community hospital settings. He currently serves as the Chief Administrative Officer for the Cambridge Health Alliance Physician Organization (CHAPO). He has administrative responsibility for all functions of CHAPO including contracting, billing and coding, accounting and finance, physician recruitment, human resources, and provider enrollment. Mr. Porell has overseen significant improvements in revenue cycle measures for charge capture, reduced charge lag, and collection rates. Under his leadership, CHAPO's financial performance improved by nearly 20% in FY10.

Prior to assuming his current position in 2006, Mr. Porell was CHA's Vice President of Clinical Services, successfully managing several key clinical programs including the launch of a new Sports Medicine program, enhancement of the existing Occupational Health program, and management of the $20 million radiology equipment upgrade plan.

Mr. Porell previously held roles as Vice President for Support Services and Associate Vice President for Rehabilitation Services at Morton Hospital and Medical Center, and he served as Supervisor of Outpatient Services for Physical Therapy at Massachusetts General Hospital.

He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of New Hampshire, a master's in physical therapy from the University of Southern California, and a master's in business administration with concentrations in health care management and finance from Boston University.

Gerald Steinberg, MDSenior Vice President, Network Development

Gerald Steinberg, MD

Gerald Steinberg, MD, is Senior Vice President of Network Development, working to develop new partnerships that benefit CHA's patients and communities. Dr. Steinberg previously served as CHA's Chief Medical Officer and Chief Medical Quality Officer. Before coming to CHA in 2005, he was Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer of UMass Memorial Health Care. He also served as interim Chairman of the Department of Orthopedics at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where he was the school's Feigenbaum Distinguished Professor of Quality, and as Chief Medical Officer of UMass Memorial Health Care.

Dr. Steinberg is an AOA graduate of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and received his bachelor’s, cum laude, from Rutgers University where he was a Henry Rutgers Scholar. He received his orthopedic training in the Harvard Combined Orthopedic Program after completing a Research Fellowship at Harvard.

Laura Sullivan, MDChief of Family Medicine

Laura Sullivan, MD, was named CHA’s chief of family medicine in 2017. Dr. Sullivan joined CHA in 2006 as the medical director of the East Somerville Health Center. She then became the medical director at the Malden Family Medicine Center in 2008 and later served as interim chief of family medicine. Dr. Sullivan was a staff physician at both sites and has held many leadership positions including president and secretary/treasurer of the CHA medical staff. She has played a key role in CHA’s transition to an accountable care organization and the implementation of the patient-centered-medical-home model of care.

As chief of family medicine, Dr. Sullivan is responsible for helping the department grow, improving its systems and access and supporting the training for the next generation of physicians as part of the Tufts University Family Medicine Residency program in Malden.

Dr. Sullivan is an assistant clinical professor at Tufts University School of Medicine. She received her medical doctorate from Chicago Medical School and completed the University of Massachusetts Worcester Family Medicine Residency. Prior to joining CHA, Dr. Sullivan worked with various vulnerable populations as a locum tenens physician, in rural Washington state, the Massachusetts state prison system and Plumley Village Health Services, part of UMass Memorial Health Care.

Brian Swann, DDS, MPHChief of Dental Medicine

Brian Swann, DDS, MPH

Brian Swann, DDS, MPH, Chief of Dental Services, is a renowned clinician who oversees all aspects of CHA's dental services - patient care, clinical quality, and the Harvard-affiliated General Practice Dental Residency.

Dr. Swann earned his dental degree at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) School of Dentistry and over the course of his lengthy career has held clinical and management positions in both private practice and the public sector. The latter includes serving as Dental Examiner for the State of California and as Dental Director of both the Sierra-Nevada and San Jose Job Corps. He was also a co-founder of the Greater Bay Area Dental Society, based in San Francisco and received the UCSF highest alumni recognition, the Medal of Honor.

After moving to the Boston region, Dr. Swann earned a Masters of Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health, where he received the Albert Schweitzer Award for Humanitarianism. He later completed Harvard fellowships in Oral Epidemiology and Minority Health Policy. He currently holds the position of Clinical Instructor at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.

Since joining CHA in 2008, Dr. Swann has continued his passion for dental care and community health improvement, particularly for multicultural populations. His other activities in this area include serving as a Clinician at the Mattapan Community Health Clinic, as Chair of the National and International Relations Committee of the National Dental Association and organizing the first joint African Tour between the American Dental Association and the National Dental Association in Kenya, Zanzibar, and Ethiopia.

Richard Swanson, MD, FACSChief of Surgery

Richard Swanson, MD, FACS

Richard Swanson, MD, FACS, who joined CHA in 2016, has more than 20 years of experience as a leading pancreatic surgeon and well-respected physician leader. He has held a wide range of clinical and academic roles throughout his career.

Dr. Swanson came to CHA from the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center (DF/BWCC), where he was the director of the Program in Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Cancer of the Division of Surgical Oncology. At DF/BWCC, he led a specialized team, including some of the best practitioners in every medical discipline, which advanced national standards of care through breakthrough research. Early in his career, Dr. Swanson held various physician leadership positions, including a six-year appointment as chief of surgical oncology, at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, one of the largest health care systems in central Massachusetts. Dr. Swanson also served an associate professor of surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Dr. Swanson received his medical doctorate from Harvard Medical School in 1980. He completed his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1987 and a surgical oncology fellowship at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in 1989.

He currently serves as an associate professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Swanson also holds membership in the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, Society of Surgical Oncology, Pancreas Club, and the New England Surgical Society. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery.

Lisa Trumble, MBASenior Vice President, Accountable Care Performance

Lisa Trumble, MBA

Lisa M. Trumble's career is showcased by successes in generating strong clinical and financial operating results for health care organizations. She has more than 20 years of experience at integrated delivery systems and physician organizations.

Lisa is currently the Senior Vice President of Accountable Care at Cambridge Health Alliance. The scope of her responsibility includes system-wide duties for accountable care and population health. Her responsibilities incorporate payor contracting, financial medical economics, regulatory compliance, administrative and clinical programming and all care and medical management functions at CHA. Under her leadership, the organization has realized significant improvements in clinical and financial outcomes that have resulted in significant cost of care savings.

Lisa joined CHA from Berkshire Health System, where she served as Vice President of Physician Services for Berkshire Health Systems and the Executive Director of the Berkshire Health Systems Physicians Organization. She was instrumental in transforming physician operation, restructuring provider employment agreements and provider compensation plans and enhancing patient satisfaction for the health system. Prior to Berkshire Health Systems, Lisa served as the Vice President of Finance and Operations at the Cambridge Health Alliance Physician Organization where she achieved similar outcomes.

Previously, Lisa was Administrative Director for Anesthesia and Surgery services lines at North Shore Medical Center and Chief Financial Officer of North Shore's Physicians Organization, which is a subsidiary of North Shore Medical Center. During her early career she held several positions in operations and finance at Commonwealth Health Management Service and Independent Physicians Association and their sister corporation Berkshire Physicians & Surgeons, P.C..

Lisa has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from North Adams State College and a Master of Science in Business Administration and Healthcare Finance from Western New England University.

Philip Wang, MD, DrPHChief of Psychiatry

Philip Wang, MD, DrPH

Philip Wang, MD, DrPH, arrived at CHA in September 2019 as the health systems Chief of Psychiatry. Dr. Wang manages the department's clinical operations for both inpatient and outpatient services, including efforts to strengthen its coordination and integration with primary care and other clinical services. In addition, he oversees the Department's academic programs, including training and research.

Dr. Wang most recently served as the deputy medical director and director of research of the American Psychiatric Association. In this role, he was responsible for developing and expanding practice resources for the more than 37,000 psychiatrists of the association. Preceding this position, Dr. Wang was the deputy director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). There, he assisted in overseeing 1,300 NIMH staff and approximately $1.5 billion spent annually on basic, translational and clinical research focused on prevention, recovery and cures.

Additionally, Dr. Wang has served on the faculty at HMS, including mentoring residents and clinical fellows on their research projects. He has authored publications in leading medical journals and conducted national and global psychiatric epidemiology studies and pharmacoepidemiologic research as well as clinical trials to test new interventions. Dr. Wang was a member of the APA DSM-V Task Force and has consulted on several APA Work Groups that developed evidence-based treatment guidelines.

Dr. Wang completed his undergraduate degree in biochemistry, medical school, psychiatry residency and chief residency, as well as a master's and doctoral degree in epidemiology, at Harvard.
