CHA Earns Top Marks on Lown Institute Ranking

CHA named one of the top 10 hospitals in the nation for Avoiding Overuse and #1 in Massachusetts for Health Equity, Community Benefit, and Avoiding Overuse

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA), a community health system serving Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston's metro-north communities, has received national recognition from the Lown Institute, a nonpartisan healthcare think tank, on the 2026 Lown Hospitals Index. CHA Cambridge Hospital was named one of the top ten hospitals in the nation for Avoiding Overuse, demonstrating CHA's success in reducing low-value care and the delivery of healthcare services that are more likely to harm than benefit patients. CHA also was ranked #1 in Massachusetts for Health Equity, Community Benefit, and Avoiding Overuse.

CHA performed well in other Lown Institute measures, earning a total of six "A" grades in the 2026 Index. CHA received top marks in Value of Care, Community Benefit, Inclusivity, Pay Equity, and Avoiding Overuse. Additionally, CHA was ranked in the Top 5 in Massachusetts for Inclusivity and Racial Inclusivity

The Lown Hospitals Index is the only national ranking that examines how equitably care is delivered, how well hospitals invest in their communities, and whether patients receive high-value care that avoids unnecessary procedures, in addition to clinical measures. More than 50 metrics contribute to a hospital's overall score.

"The best hospitals aren't just clinically excellent, they're deeply committed to the communities they serve and work hard to ensure all patients get the care they need," said Vikas Saini, MD, president of the Lown Institute. "High performance on the Lown Index shows that hospitals are doing more of what matters to patients and communities."
