Tufts University Family Medicine Residency at CHA Innovators in Medical Education
Program mission and goals
Tufts Family Medicine Residency Program at Cambridge Health Alliance (Tufts FMR), is dedicated to training residents to be master clinicians and leaders in the future of family medicine.
Using innovative education methods and an online learning portfolio, our learner-centered approach help residents to track and develop their skills and knowledge. A culture of deep respect for our residents nurtures their innate strengths and internal motivation to help them reach their full potential. Thorough teaching in Information Mastery and Improvement Science supported by professional coaching builds critical life-long skills. Resident-selected Areas of Concentration allow additional in-depth exploration of specific areas of medicine to position graduates to pursue additional fellowship training or to develop their unique practices.
Built on the premise that outpatient medicine is a unique and complex skill set, coupled with robust inpatient training, our “clinic is the curriculum” strategy steeps our residents in our advanced PCMH team-based care model. We strive to create graduates with sophisticated skills and knowledge to provide leadership in the team-based, patient-focused practices needed for tomorrow.
The outpatient curriculum is built around robust team-based primary care with integrated population health, complex care management, behavioral health, and addictions services. The inpatient experience is a mix of community and tertiary care hospitals throughout Boston to provide a rigorous medical foundation. Our longitudinal Leadership and Improvement Science Curriculum grows residents to be leaders who are experts in change management. Our wellness curriculum moves health care past just the treatment of disease by promoting self-care in residents, patients and staff.
In addition to all major specialties participating in our training program, residents can select Areas of Concentration in Maternity Care, Hospital Care, Sports Medicine, Integrative Health, Research/Scholarly Activity, Reproductive Health, Community Health, Geriatrics, Patient Centered Medical Home, and five other concentrations. We also have addictions training and multiple group visit programs.
We have nine core Family Medicine MD/DO faculty, >25 family medicine clinical faculty, a psychologist, pharmacist, and a broad cohort of specialist partners. Additionally our “all teach, all learn” philosophy of life-long learning enlists all care team members as both teachers and learners. 100% of our core faculty have additional fellowship training, additional masters degrees and/or CAQ’s (certificates of added qualifications – sports medicine, geriatrics and integrative medicine). At TuftsFMR you will train with master family medicine educators that serve as your coaches and mentors.
