Local Artwork Transforms Cambridge Health Alliance’s Whidden Hospital Campus
Posted Date: 7/3/2012

Everett, MA…Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) has collaborated with area nonprofit The Art Connection to create a more welcoming environment for patients, visitors, and staff at CHA’s Whidden Hospital campus. The Art Connection, an organization that connects artists and collectors with community service groups, facilitated the donation of 21 original works of art by 14 artists for recent installation at the Whidden campus. This current placement of original art joins placements from 2009 and 2010 for a total of 66 works of art donated to the Whidden campus through The Art Connection to date.

A committee of CHA staff selected the pieces of diverse media, including acrylic and oil paintings, pastels, watercolors, and a monotype. The Art Connection also provided partial funding towards the framing of unframed artwork. CHA organized a bake sale and raffle to raise money to frame the rest of the artwork, which is displayed throughout the hospital.

"The artwork has truly transformed the hospital," said Deborah Murphy, RN, MHA, site administrator of CHA’s Whidden Hospital campus, located at 103 Garland Street in Everett. "Both patients and staff constantly tell me how much more inviting the hospital environment is with the addition of these pieces, and I am extremely grateful The Art Connection provided us with this opportunity."

The Art Connection builds connections between artists and their communities by bringing art to community organizations – clinics, youth and senior service programs, job training centers, shelters and residential programs, and more. This simple but powerful idea has resulted in hundreds of installations into scores of organizations, giving those who often have the least access to art direct contact in their own communities.
