Cambridge Health Alliance to Honor Dr. Donald M. Berwick with Art of Healing Award
Posted Date: 5/15/2012
Cambridge, MA…Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA), a Harvard-affiliated integrated healthcare system serving Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston’s metro-north communities, is pleased to honor national healthcare leader Donald M. Berwick, MD, MPP, FRCP, with its Art of Healing Award. The award, to be presented on May 30th at CHA’s annual fundraising event, celebrates visionary men and women who transcend boundaries, joyfully embrace humanity, and profoundly inspire the healing of body and spirit.

Dr. Berwick is the former President and CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), an organization that he co-founded and led for over 20 years. His work at IHI focused on motivating and building the will for change, identifying and testing new models of care in partnership with both patients and health care professionals, and ensuring the broadest possible adoption of best practices and effective innovations at hospitals across the country. In July 2010, President Obama appointed Dr. Berwick to the position of Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), a position he held until December
2011.

A pediatrician by background, Dr. Berwick has served on the staffs of Children’s Hospital Boston, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Brigham and Women's Hospital. He is widely recognized as an inspirational teacher and mentor and has served on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health. He was vice chair of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, the first "Independent Member" of the Board of Trustees of the American Hospital Association, and chair of the National Advisory Council of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. An elected member of the Institute of Medicine (IOM), Dr. Berwick served two terms on the IOM’s governing Council and was a member of the IOM’s Global Health Board.

Dr. Berwick is internationally known for his commitment to patient-centered care and improving patient safety, tenets at the core of CHA’s mission. CHA, which has a long history of working on innovative projects with IHI and Dr. Berwick, was one of just seven organizations nationwide to be selected for the IHI-administered Pursuing Perfection grant program in 2001. Dr. Berwick’s coaching and commitment helped CHA develop models to make care safer and more effective, ultimately laying the groundwork for the Patient-Centered Medical Home transformation that is now underway at the health system. CHA’s ability to integrate its healthcare delivery system, academic programs, and public health functions to improve the health of individual patients and entire populations has made it one of the premier safety net institutions in the country.

“Dr. Berwick’s passion for patient-centered care and quality improvement inspires our work,” said Patrick Wardell, CHA’s Chief Executive Officer. “His influence is deeply felt as we strive to treat each patient as an individual person, not as a disease or series of conditions, and we are honored to celebrate his tireless efforts to transform the delivery of health care nationwide.”

CHA will present the award to Dr. Berwick at its fifth annual Art of Healing Award Dinner on Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Grand Ballroom in Boston. Sacha Pfeiffer, host of NPR affiliate WBUR’s All Things Considered, will emcee the program. The event is expected to raise more than $350,000 to support CHA and its critical community health mission.
