THE TRAUMA RECOVERY AND RESILIENCY PROJECT
Victims of Violence Program (VOV)
Principal Investigator: Michaela Mendelsohn, Ph.D.
The Trauma Recovery and Resiliency Research Project of the Victims
of Violence Program was originally approved by The Cambridge Hospital
Institutional Review Board in 1992. Each year, a number of clinicians,
researchers and trainees have joined us to assist with some aspect
of the overall research project and to pursue annually established
research goals. The project has two major components:
(1) Self-Report Treatment Outcome Study: The purpose of
this study is to assess the symptomatic presentation and treatment
outcome of patients receiving VOV clinical services, utilizing a
comprehensive battery of well-normed self-report measures. Currently,
all patients entering VOV treatment are administered a self-report
packet evaluating a variety of symptoms associated with complex
posttraumatic stress disorder, such as depression, anxiety, posttraumatic
stress, dissociation, disturbed eating, affect regulation difficulties,
interpersonal problems, substance use, and suicidal and self-harming
behaviors. Patients receiving group therapy in the VOV program are
re-administered this self-report battery at the termination of the
group and at 3-4 months post-treatment. Over the years, the VOV
research program has amassed large database on treatment outcome
for patients in individual and group therapy. Analysis of this data
is currently underway.

(2) Multidimensional Assessment of Trauma Impact, Recovery and Resilience:
The purpose of this study is to harness clinical observation and
analysis in assessing trauma impact, recovery and resilience evinced
by VOV patients on each of eight domains of psychological functioning.
Patients entering VOV group treatment are interviewed and rated
by members of the research team using the Multidimensional Trauma
Recovery and Resiliency Interview (MTRR-I) and companion rating
scale (MTRR) developed in the course of this research by the principal
investigator (Harvey et al, 1994; Harvey et al, 2000; Harvey et
al, 2003; copies available on this website). MTRR ratings are also
obtained from their treating clinician with the patient's consent.
Participants are offered a second interview once they have completed
group treatment. They are offered a small financial incentive in
exchange for their time. Data analysis is ongoing and involves comparison
of both quantitative changes in ratings as well as qualitative differences
observed in the interview transcripts from the first to second interview.
