Cambridge Health Alliance Hospital Campus Named Breast Imaging Center of Excellence
Cambridge, MA…Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) announced
today that its Cambridge Hospital campus has been named a Breast
Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology
(ACR).
The ACR also awarded CHA a three-year term of accreditation in
Breast Ultrasound and Ultrasound-Guided Biopsy following a recent
survey. CHA's Mammography and Mammographic Biopsy facilities were
previously granted accreditation.
"I am excited the ACR has recognized CHA's commitment to delivering
state-of-the-art imaging services to our patients," said Janet
Baum, MD, CHA's Director of Breast Imaging. "The designation
is also a credit to our radiologic technologists, whose expert care
and exceptional patient safety measures have been pivotal in achieving
this milestone."
CHA continues to enhance its radiology services to improve patient
access. It is currently installing a cutting-edge magnetic resonance
(MR) scanner at its Cambridge Hospital campus. The new technology
will allow for shorter scan times, better image quality, and improved
patient comfort, as it will offer feet-first scanning capability
for most exams to help claustrophobic patients. The MR unit will
allow increased capacity for breast cancer detection and screening,
including biopsy capabilities. Once the MR unit is fully installed,
CHA will obtain accreditation for Breast MRI and MRI-Guided Biopsy.
CHA offers comprehensive breast health services to women from across
Massachusetts. This includes digital mammography at each of its
three hospital campuses (Cambridge, Somerville, and Whidden), the
Cambridge Breast Center, and the new Cambridge Breast Center Whidden

The ACR, headquartered in Reston, Va., awards accreditation to
facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after
a peer-review evaluation of the practice. Evaluations are conducted
by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts
in the field. They assess the qualifications of the personnel and
the adequacy of facility equipment. The surveyors report their findings
to the ACR's Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides
the practice with a comprehensive report.
