MEMORY CENTER
Throughout the aging process our bodies and our minds change. Usually
this happens gradually, but in older adults, changes can occur very
suddenly.
The Memory Center, which sees people both in Cambridge and Somerville,
includes experts from Psychiatry, Psychology, Neurology, and Internal
Medicine. Using a team approach, these providers work with patients,
families, and caregivers to understand the cause of any memory loss.
They also work closely with Somerville-Cambridge
Elder Services to develop treatment and ongoing support plans.
As part of Cambridge Health Alliance, a national leader in mental
health care, the Memory Center has the experience and skills to
understand the most challenging problems, including unusual memory
loss and dementia. As such, it serves as a referral resource for
doctors across the Greater Boston region.
Patients who visit the Memory Center are carefully assessed in
a number of different ways including:
- Initial Evaluation by a Geriatric Psychiatrist or trained
Internist
- Neuropsychological Testing
- Neurology Consultation (when appropriate)
The Memory Center team then summarizes the findings and reviews
them with the patient and family. This report is sent to referring
doctors who are seen as our partners in care.
Local patients are then referred to Somerville-Cambridge Elder
Services Memory Service who provides support for caregivers, helps
with long-term care planning, and collaborates with other health
professionals about each case.
