INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY OVERVIEW

The Internal Medicine Residency at CHA provides an outstanding community-based training experience at a Harvard teaching hospital right outside of Boston, MA.

Residents find a world-class faculty who focus on both the care of the patient and the growth of the resident. Our rigorous experiences balance clinical care and didactics, and provide the skill, knowledge, and attitudes to excel in the practice of Internal Medicine. Program graduates have become outstanding primary care providers and medical subspecialists, as well as teachers and policy leaders.

The training program emphasizes excellence in all competencies: Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Practice Based Learning, Professionalism, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, and System-based Practice. Residents can choose subspecialty electives at any of the Harvard-affiliated tertiary care hospitals in Boston. Individualized training experiences also allow each Resident to explore his/her own special interests.

Residents are appointed as "Clinical Fellows in Medicine" at Harvard Medical School and have access to the Countway Medical Library and all Boston and Cambridge-area athletic facilities and housing.

Recent program graduates of our program have pursued varied career paths in clinical medicine, general medicine research, and public health. Over 80% are engaged in primary care practice at least part time, with one-third practicing in underserved areas. Of those who have pursued advanced training, many have completed fellowships in general medicine, or post-graduate training in occupational medicine or public health. One in five remain within the Boston area.

Here are some reasons why the CHA Internal Medicine Residency is the right choice for tomorrow's medical leaders:

  • A diverse and interesting multicultural patient population

  • Emphasis on prevention and cross-cultural medicine

  • Participation in community-based service-learning projects

  • Subspecialty and elective opportunities at any Harvard-affiliated hospital
