The Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship
The Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship is a one-year, ACGME-certified
program designed to provide in-depth biopsychosocial knowledge and
clinical experience necessary for a successful career in geriatric
psychiatry. The program capitalizes on its experienced faculty
and its unique commitment to geriatric patients within a multicultural,
community-based system of care. During the training year, Fellows
divide their time in a variety of clinical settings including rotations
with multidisciplinary staff in the Geriatric Psychiatry Inpatient
Unit at the Whidden Hospital, Consultation/Liaison at Spaulding
Cambridge, Geriatric Service Outpatient Clinic, the Elder Service
Plan (ESP), nursing homes, rest homes, and home visitation programs.
Faculty members include board-certified geriatric psychiatrists
who are devoted to the provision of excellent supervision and teaching
during all rotations. In addition, the program offers a comprehensive
didactic series covering topics related to significant aspects of
geriatric care.
At the completion of the training year, Fellows will exhibit proficiency
in the clinical practice of geriatric psychiatry including the ability
to anticipate ongoing changes in the provision of medical and psychiatric
care. Primary training elements include:
- Evaluation and management of geriatric patients across the spectrum
of care;
- Development of consultation-liaison skills;
- Development of leadership skills in the multidisciplinary delivery
of mental health care;
- Management of a multiple array of therapies while working with
comprehensive care teams;
- Assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of geriatric patients representing
of wide variety of diagnostic presentations, socioeconomic, cultural,
and ethnic backgrounds
