DIDACTICS
The Fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry emphasizes didactic training
throughout the year. Seminar series are designed to improve the
knowledge base and skill development of individual fellows. Specific
training series include the following topics and objectives:
- Geriatric neuropsychiatry
- Psychiatric disorders of late life
- Psychosocial perspectives in Geriatric Psychiatry
- Geriatric neuropsychiatry
This training series discusses basic physiological principles of
aging as they relate to the brain and central nervous system. Fellows
will also gain an understanding of the potential neuropsychiatric
effects of standard pharmacologic practices in the elderly and will
gain an appreciation for the neurologic basis, course, and prognosis
of many common degenerative diseases.
Psychiatric disorders of late life
This training series teaches Fellows how to formulate a geropsychiatric
case in terms of differential diagnosis, appropriate evaluation
and treatment. Participants will discuss differential diagnosis
and distinctions between dementia, delirium, and affective or psychotic
disorders in the elderly. They will also review the appropriate
assessment and management of cognitive disorders. Treatment approaches
to these disorders will also be discussed.
Psychosocial perspectives in Geriatric Psychiatry
This didactic series is offered to enhance Fellows sensitivity
to the dramatic life changes that accompany aging. Through their
participation in this seminar, Fellows will be better prepared to
work with families and caregivers of older adults. This seminar
series will also review the evaluation and assessment of elder abuse
or neglect, and the significance of end-of-life decisions for older
adults. Fellows will also review ethical and medico-legal issues
that commonly arise in the treatment of geriatric patients, principles
of autonomy and paternalism, informed consent, guardianship, and
decision-making capacity.
