About ImPACT Concussion Testing

Cambridge Health Alliance is proud to offer ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) services through Warren Bodine, DO. A board certified Family Medicine and Sports Medicine physician, Dr. Bodine is one of only 15 physicians in Massachusetts who is a Credentialed ImPACT Consultant. He is currently using this system with the Malden and Revere public school systems to help protect their high school athletes.

Sustaining a concussion can cause serious and long-term health impacts, especially if the injury is not properly diagnosed and managed. According to ImPACT, an estimated 300,000 Americans suffer from concussion injuries each year. ImPACT testing is a way to manage concussions to keep our patients safe and healthy.

Why is ImPACT testing important to athletes?

A concussion is like a bruise on the brain that needs time to heal. Research shows that athletes have increased health risks when exposed to additional trauma before completely recovering from an existing concussion. To help curb this trend, neuropsychological testing has become the standard of care to measure an athlete’s readiness to safely to contact sports.

ImPACT concussion testing is the most-widely used computerized concussion evaluation system.  It measures the effects of a concussion on an athlete’s memory, attention and reaction time. The test result, combined with a doctor’s clinical evaluation, helps determine an appropriate return-to-play decision for an athlete.

How does ImPACT work?

ImPACT testing is conducted through an initial evaluation by a clinician followed by a 20 minute interactive computerized test. Results are available to the clinician within hours by phone, with a detailed written clinical report to follow within 48 hours.

How do I pay for ImPACT services?

The cost is $50 for the initial baseline test since this is not covered by insurances.  Post-injury testing is covered by most insurance companies.
