Meet the Team

Core Staff

Patients who come to our unit benefit from one of the most experienced geriatric psychiatry teams in Massachusetts. This includes board certified geriatric psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, internal medicine doctors, and medical specialists.

Stephen L. Pinals, MD Stephen Pinals, MD
Medical Director

Board certified, Geriatric Psychiatry
Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School

Dr. Stephen Pinals is a native of the Boston area. He originally trained in psychiatry at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center and completed his fellowship in geriatric psychiatry at the McLean Hospital in 1995. He joined the clinical faculty of the Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) in 1998 and helped to establish their fellowship training program in geriatric psychiatry. In 2011, he became Medical Director of the Geriatric Psychiatry Specialty Unit based at the Whidden Memorial Hospital. Dr. Pinals also serves as Director of Geriatric Psychiatry for the Cambridge Health Alliance. His academic appointment is with Harvard Medical School as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry.

Melissa Galante, RNMelissa Galante, RN
Nurse Manager

Melissa is an experienced nurse with extensive knowledge in Geriatric Medicine, Psychiatry and Hospice care. A graduate of Salem State College, Melissa previously managed the Geriatric Psychiatry Unit at Merrimack Valley Hospital and the inpatient Kaplan Family Hospice House. Melissa has been with Cambridge Health Alliance since December 2011.

David Summersby, LICSWDavid Summersby, LICSW
Social Work Manager

After receiving an MSW from Boston University in 1993, David Summersby has worked as a clinical social worker in psychiatric hospitals and behavioral rehabilitation settings for the last 20 years. He joined the Cambridge Health Alliance in October 2012 after 11 years as the lead psychiatric social worker at Melrose Wakefield Hospital. He is the social work manager of both the geriatric and adult psychiatry units at Whidden Hospital. He has hired and supervised many successful social workers and social work interns who have gone on to professional positions throughout the Boston area.
