CHA Emergency Department Considered a National Model
Posted Date: 3/29/2012

Cambridge, MA...Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA), a Harvard-affiliated public healthcare system, was highlighted by HealthLeaders Media for its nationally recognized improvements in emergency care.  CHA operates three 24-hour emergency departments, at its Cambridge Hospital, Somerville Hospital, and Whidden Hospital campuses, and sees nearly 100,000 emergency patients each year.

On March 29, 2012 hospital leaders from across the country tuned into a webcast held at CHA's Cambridge Hospital campus about CHA's Emergency Department transformation as part of the HealthLeaders Media Rounds series. During the presentation, titled "Create Your High-Performance, Patient-Centered Emergency Department," CHA staff detailed methods and strategies used to redesign the Emergency Department, offering practical insight and real-world solutions.

While CHA operates one of the state's largest emergency departments, patients are typically able to begin receiving care within five minutes of arrival. The wait times reflect the average time it takes for a patient to be placed into a treatment room to be seen by a qualified health care professional.

The tremendous advancements in emergency care at all three hospital campuses came about through improving patient flow through a streamlined admissions process and an investment in state-of-the-art technology that monitors the status of every emergency patient in real-time. Enhanced efficiency and patient satisfaction are reflected in CHA's consistent ranking among the top hospitals in the state on publicly reported quality measures.

Participating in the webcast were Allison Bayer, Executive VP and Chief Operating Officer, Lisa Kingsley-Rocker, RN, BSN, ED Nurse Manager at the Cambridge and Somerville Hospital campuses, Luis Lobón, MD, Chief of Emergency Medicine at the Cambridge and Somerville Hospital campuses, Assaad Sayah, MD, Chief of Emergency Medicine, and Gerald Steinberg, MD, Chief Medical Officer.
