CHA Names New Chief of Geriatrics

Serena H. Chao, MD, MSc, Chief of CHA GeriatricsCAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA), an academic community health system serving Cambridge, Somerville and Boston’s metro-north region, has named Serena H. Chao, MD, MSc, as its new chief of geriatrics.

Dr. Chao will lead the Division of Geriatrics and work to enhance CHA’s strong clinical programs and extensive services for older adult health, including the Elder Service Plan and the House Calls and Nursing Home programs. In addition to her administrative and teaching roles, Dr. Chao will practice in both the Elder Service Plan and House Calls, clinical community programs at CHA that enable older adults to maximize their independence and quality of life.

“Geriatricians believe that health and well-being encompasses more than the medical management of diseases,” said Dr. Chao. “It also involves addressing the psychosocial and environmental factors that impact people’s lives, and aligning medical decision-making with people’s goals of care. I am excited to join CHA because it shares this core belief and is committed to improving the health of underserved populations."

For the past six years Dr. Chao served as the director of the Boston Medical Center/Boston University School of Medicine (BMC/BUSM) Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program. She also was the education director for BU’s Section of Geriatrics. She is highly regarded as a teacher and has been recognized with the BUSM Department of Medicine’s junior faculty mentoring award. Dr. Chao has served on national working groups to develop milestones for the assessment of learners’ competencies in geriatrics medicine, and she has published and delivered numerous presentations on a wide variety of topics related to geriatrics practice and training. Additionally, she has been named to Boston Magazine’s Top Docs list for the past six years.

Dr. Chao attended Harvard College and the University of Rochester School of Medicine and trained in internal medicine at Baystate Medical Center. She completed the BMC/BUSM geriatrics fellowship, during which time she also obtained a Master of Science degree in epidemiology at the BU School of Public Health.
