Acute Hospital Services for Adults

Adult Inpatient Units

Cambridge Health Alliance has secure hospital units at both the CHA Cambridge Hospital and CHA Whidden Hospital campuses. These units provide intensive and short-term psychiatry services to adults ages eighteen and older.

Our treatment team of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, and occupational therapists works to identify the reasons for psychiatric care and the supports needed for outpatient treatment.

Treatment plans focus on assessing the patient, stabilizing their health, and aftercare planning.

Adult Inpatient units include:

CHA Whidden Hospital campus: West 2
CHA Cambridge Hospital campus: Cahill 4

Geriatric Care

CHA understands that older adults often need a different kind of mental health care. That's why we have created a separate Geriatric Psychiatry Specialty Unit (GPSU) at the CHA Whidden Hospital campus.

Our staff cares for patients with acute behavior or cognitive health issues and those with a primary psychiatric diagnosis who have additional medical needs. We provide a wide range of interventions including ECT.

Typical admissions come from patients already in the hospital, those in nursing homes, and elders in the community who have had a significant change in mental status.

Consultation-Liaison Services

The Consultation-Liaison service (C-L service) works with doctors and their patients to help manage mental health needs while the patient is undergoing medical care. Services are available at our hospital campuses as well as our primary care centers.

The inpatient C-L service consults with doctors to help give their patients better care. The staff includes attending psychiatrists, who often have fellows, residents, or medical students working with them.
