Dr. Launer, is a fellowship trained and board certified sports medicine surgeon who focuses on arthroscopic surgery, joint preservation, joint replacement surgery and fractures of the shoulder, elbow and hip and knee. His mission is to treat all patients with compassion and respect and provide the highest standard of cutting edge orthopedic care with the goal of returning patients back to athletic, work, or daily living activities, with the highest possible level of function.
A native of New York City, Dr. Launer decided to become a Sports Medicine surgeon after a skiing injury resulted in torn knee ligaments which required ligament reconstructive surgery. He was accepted and completed medical school at the University of South Florida where he was honored as a senior surgery medical student. He continued his training in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he assisted in caring for athletes of all levels including those in high school, NCAA division I and II, and professional.
He continued his training at the Cincinnati Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center, working with one of the nation's best known sports medicine and knee surgery teams. This advanced training included sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery, and cutting-edge techniques to diagnose, treat, and rehabilitate complex, shoulder, elbow, and knee injuries - including advanced cartilage restoration procedures and advanced arthroscopic techniques to repair shoulder damage. During this time he continued to care for athletes including those at the Olympic and professional levels.
In addition to patient care efforts, Dr. Launer has presented research at local and regional meetings, and co-authored a chapter on elbow injuries in throwing athletes. His scientific areas of interest are the biological enhancement of tissue healing, cartilage regeneration, and soft tissue to bone healing in shoulder and knee surgery.
Michael H Theodoulou, DPM, is a board certified podiatric surgeon specializing in sports related injuries of the foot and ankle. He has spent much of his twenty years in practice managing lower extremity biomechanics and their relationship to sports injuries. This has emphasized use of orthotic bracing. He has embraced performance of minimally invasive techniques to advance healing in the athlete. This has included extensive small joint arthroscopy, tendinoscopy, shockwave therapy, radiofrequency coblation, prolotherapy and plasma rich protein injections.
Dr. Theodoulou has relocated from the Washington, DC area where he was listed as a top sports medicine physician in Washingtonian Magazine. He served as the podiatrist for the NHL Washington Capitols and Georgetown University athletic department. He has lectured frequently to runner's organizations. He treats the weekend warrior to the elite professional athlete.
Adam Gustin, MD, is the Director of Musculoskeletal Imaging at Cambridge Health Alliance. He is board-certified in Diagnostic Radiology. He did his Residency at Mount Auburn Hospital and he also did a fellowship in Musculoskeletal Imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Charles "Tony" Manry is the Ambulatory Rehab manager for the Cambridge Health Alliance, managing both the Assembly Square and the Whidden campus out-patient Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech-language Pathology departments. In addition he manages the Sports Medicine department within the department of Orthopaedics.
He holds a Bachelors of Science from Purdue University in Speech-Language Pathology and a Master's of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Rush University. He is currently completing a Master's of Business Administration degree at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.
Dawn Purington, M.ED., ATC, is a Certified and Licensed Athletic Trainer who works with several local professional sports teams. She is a graduate of Southern Connecticut State University, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science, and Temple University, where she earned a Masters of Education in Athletic Training and Sports Medicine.
Over the past 10 years, Dawn has worked in a variety of sports settings. Most recently, she has been Head Athletic Trainer for the Boston Blazer's Indoor Major League Lacrosse franchise. Prior to this she was Assistant Athletic Trainer and on the Clinical Faculty of Merrimack College in North Andover, MA, where she focused her energies on Division I Hockey East - Men's Ice Hockey program. She also served as Assistant Athletic Trainer at the University of Pennsylvania, where she cared for the Women's Soccer, Women's Gymnastics and Men's Lacrosse teams. She was the Head Athletic Trainer at the 2005 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championships and has published research on Gymnastics Tumbling Maneuvers.
Jeff Farrell, ATC, is a Certified & Licensed Athletic Trainer (ATC). He graduated from Bridgewater State College in 1997 and has been certified since. Jeff works primarily at Arlington High School providing services to the entire school's athletic department. He also works at Assembly Square assisting the Physical Therapist with treatment of patients and has worked with every level of athletics from youth sports to professional sports.
Jeff is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and currently serves in the Army National Guard as a Medic. His own athletic experience includes football, track & field, skiing & mountain biking.
The primary role of an Athletic Trainer is the evaluation and treatment of injuries that occur during athletics. They act as a bridge for the athlete to parents, coaches and other medical professionals. Nancy Banfield, MSPT, is a Massachusetts Licensed Physical Therapist. With a Master's of Science in Physical Therapy from Boston University, Nancy has over 11 years of experience in various PT settings including but not limited to acute care, outpatient orthopaedics and aquatic PT. She enjoys treating physical therapy patients of all ages and helping them achieve their rehabilitation goals. Nancy currently works as a Staff Physical Therapist in the Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation department at the CHA Whidden Hospital campus.
Nick Wilson is a Massachusetts licensed Physical Therapist with 5 years experience in orthopaedics, spine, and sports medicine. Nick graduated with Honors and Distinction from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and was awarded the Quebec Prize for Clinical Excellence in 2004. Joining Cambridge Health Alliance in 2006, Nick is a member of the outpatient sports medicine rehab team, has particular interest in sport specific training, strength and conditioning, and manual therapy. Areas of specific practice include Medical Exercise Therapy (MET) and Mulligan Manual Therapy. Nick is fluent in French, and enjoys playing ice hockey, soccer, cycling and snowboarding. Nick lives in Brookline Massachusetts with his wife Melanie and dog Conan.
Danielle Lanata is a graduate of Boston University. She received her Bachelors of Science in Health Studies and continued on at BU to receive in Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2009. Danielle joined CHA in 2009 and enjoys working with the professional athletes as well as collegiate and high school athletes. She has special interest in working with pediatric patients with sports related injuries. Danielle continues to advance her knowledge in manual therapy and sports medicine through a broad range of continuing education courses.
Lyle Morgan, PTA, is a Massachusetts Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant. He is a graduate of Newbury College in 1999 with a PTA Degree and a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Boston in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. A PTA works closely with Physical Therapists implementing exercise protocols and delivering coordinated rehabilitative care to patients.
Lyle is a former Division II Collegiate scholarship soccer player and two-time Academic All-American at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. He is a member of the Sports Medicine Staff providing rehabilitative services. His interests including treating patients with various surgical and non-surgical orthopaedic and sports related injuries, and injury prevention. His past experience includes being a member of the spinal cord, stroke, and traumatic brain injury day treatment programs at National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, DC. Lyle is currently working in the Occupational Health and Orthopaedic Center at Assembly Square.
Adam Thomas is in his second year working with the Cambridge Health Alliance Sports Medicine Team. This year he is the Head Athletic Trainer.
Adam is also a full-time faculty member in the Athletic Training Education Program and Physical Therapy Department and has been working within the Sports Medicine Department at Northeastern since 2005, serving as the coordinator of care for men's rowing team this year and women's field hockey in the previous five years.
In addition to his Northeastern duties, Adam is the Head Athletic Trainer for the USA indoor lacrosse team and has worked with that team since the summer of 2010 and will be headed to Prague in May 2011 to cover the indoor world championships. He has also volunteered within the USA Olympic Training Committee, working women's ice hockey trial camp in 2008. He also currently works with USA men's field hockey and has traveled to Mexico for the Junior Pan American Games as well as Vancouver, Canada for a four game tournament. Adam served as a faculty member for the International Scholar Laureate Program delegation on medicine, leading pre-medical students, to South Africa in May 2009 and also to China in May 2010. In June 2011, he will be back in South Africa leading a group of 20 students and teaching two classes while over there.
Prior to working at Northeastern, Thomas worked as an assistant athletic trainer at Bryant University for one year and then moved on to work with Major League Baseball's Houston Astros for three years. In 2004-2005, he worked as a lecturer and athletic trainer at Merrimack College, covering field hockey, men's basketball, and baseball.
Thomas received his undergraduate degree from Northeastern in 1999 and completed a graduate degree in 2001 from Western Michigan University. Thomas is a member by the National Athletic Trainer's Association and has been certified for over 10 years. Currently he is working towards completing his doctorate degree in Physical Therapy at Northeastern.
Thomas grew up in Marshfield, Massachusetts, and presently resides in Dorchester, Massachusetts.
Warren A. Bodine, DO, is a Primary Care Sports Medicine Physician who joined CHA in July 2010. He is Board Certified in Osteopathic Family Practice and Primary Care Sports Medicine. He specializes in medical management of sports injuries. His interests are the care of the athlete, exercise promotion for the prevention of chronic adult diseases (cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity), and Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy. Dr. Bodine sees patients at the CHA Malden Family Medicine Center in Malden, MA.
Originally from Long Island, NY, Dr. Bodine completed his medical school training and residency in Family Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford, NJ. During his tenure, he served as class president, was inducted into the Arnold P. Gold Humanism in Medicine National Honor Society, and received the Best Teaching Intern Award from the UMDNJ-SOM Osteopathic Postdoctoral Training Institution. His research on Epstein Barr Virus during residency earned him First Prize in the Richard J. Kresja, D.O., FACOFP Scientific Poster Competition at the annual American College of Osteopathic Family Physician's Conference in 2009.
Dr. Bodine went on to complete his fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine at Christiana Care Health System in Delaware. During his fellowship, he had the opportunity to work with two NCAA Division I Universities (Delaware State University and University of Delaware), local high schools, and provided coverage for multiple mass participation events including the Beast of the East Wrestling Tournament, Keystone State Games and Delaware Marathon. He also developed sports medicine emergency management scenarios for residents to learn from at Christiana Care's Virtual Education Simulation Technology Lab.
Dr. Bodine, along with his wife, Tara and energetic yellow lab, Casey, are excited about the opportunity to live in the Boston area. He is honored to instruct future physicians on primary care and musculoskeletal medicine. His interests include running, biking, spending time with friends and family and rooting for the New York Mets and New York Giants.
