Cambridge Health Alliance Appoints Chief Medical Officer

Cambridge, MA…Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA), a Harvard-affiliated public healthcare system that serves Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston's metro-north region, has named Gerald Steinberg, MD, as its Chief Medical Officer.

Dr. Steinberg joined CHA in 2005 as Chief Medical Quality Officer and Senior Medical Director. He has led many noteworthy performance improvement initiatives that have resulted in better care for patients with high-risk illness such as pneumonia, heart failure, and myocardial infarction, placing CHA's aggregate quality measures at or near the top quartile for safety net hospitals across the country.

Dr. Steinberg has strengthened CHA's quality and safety measures across all departments, implementing many clinical process advancements, including efforts to reduce hospital-acquired infection and the enhancement of communication and reporting of performance data to guide continued improvement. Additionally, Dr. Steinberg provided medical leadership during CHA's successful Joint Commission Survey in 2008 as well as a Massachusetts Department of Public Health survey regarding care for stroke patients.

In his new role as Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Steinberg will provide physician leadership for operations and strategic planning in addition to the oversight of medical quality at CHA. His expertise will be critical in enhancing clinical processes and systems in order to provide high-quality care and programs to patients, physicians, affiliates, and payers.

"I am both humbled and energized by the support I have received," said Dr. Steinberg. "I look forward to working with our Department Chiefs and leaders at all levels of our organization as CHA begins its transformation into an accountable care organization (ACO) that will deliver high value health care to our patients and communities. This transformation presents tremendous opportunities as well as many challenges, and I am confident that our staff's collective energy, excellence, and commitment to CHA's mission will help us succeed."

"Dr. Steinberg has worked tirelessly to advance the quality of care at CHA and promote the necessary accountability to ensure we are constantly improving," said CHA Chief Executive Officer Dennis Keefe. "He possesses a great understanding of CHA and its clinical services, and his leadership will be instrumental in aiding CHA as it adopts a new business model and becomes an ACO."

Before coming to CHA, Dr. Steinberg was Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer of UMass Memorial Health Care. Prior to that, he served as interim Chairman of the Department of Orthopedics at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and as Chief Medical Officer of UMass Memorial Health Care, administering medical oversight for the development and operation of the health care system. Dr. Steinberg was appointed the Feigenbaum Distinguished Professor of Quality at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Dr. Steinberg is an AOA graduate of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and received his Bachelor's Degree, Cum Laude, from Rutgers University where he was a Henry Rutgers Scholar. He received his orthopedic training in the Harvard Combined Orthopedic Program after completing a Research Fellowship at Harvard.
