Cambridge Health Alliance Psychiatrist Receives Art of Healing Award

Cambridge, MA…Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA), a public healthcare system with three hospital campuses and a network of community-based health centers that serve Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston's Metro-North region, announced today that psychiatrist Marshall Forstein, MD, has received CHA's second annual Art of Healing Award. The award recognizes an individual for exemplary leadership, advocacy, and innovation in healing.

Dr. Forstein is Director of CHA's Adult Psychiatry Residency Training Program, former Director of CHA's HIV Mental Health Services, and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. From 1990-2002, he served as Medical Director of Mental Health and Addiction Services at the Fenway Health Center.

A multifaceted physician and educator, Dr. Forstein has made extensive contributions to the field of psychiatry. The Art of Healing Award honors his groundbreaking work in the mental health aspects of HIV/AIDS; his significant impact as a teacher and trainer of mental health providers, primary care providers, and residents both nationally and internationally; and his leadership on numerous major national, regional, and institution-based committees relating to HIV and/or mental health.

Dr. Forstein has played an integral role in the development of national educational literature and curriculum on the psychiatric and psychosocial manifestations of HIV and on the treatment of gay and lesbian individuals, couples, and families. He chaired the American Psychiatric Association's Commission on AIDS from 1991-2002 and since then has chaired the Steering Committee of the Program in HIV Psychiatry in the American Psychiatric Institute for Research and Education.

"Throughout his career, Dr. Forstein has inspired patients, colleagues, and students to aspire to extraordinary healing--the kind that comes from respect, compassion, and courage," said Jay Burke, MD, MPH, Chairman and Chief of CHA's Department of Psychiatry and Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. "Dr. Forstein's commitment to training a new generation of doctors in community-based health care has been critical in advancing our mission to bring the expertise of an innovative teaching hospital into the community to benefit all those in need."

Dr. Forstein is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and has been appointed to the Residency Review Committee for Psychiatry of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. A graduate of the College of Medicine at the University of Vermont, Dr. Forstein completed his internship at Presbyterian Hospital, Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, and his residency in psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The award was presented at the Art of Healing Award Dinner on Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at the Charles Hotel Ballroom in Cambridge, Mass.
