Cambridge Health Alliance's Birth Center to Celebrate 10th Anniversary

- Event also marks 20th anniversary of Cambridge Midwives and will feature speakers, music, and children's activities -

The Cambridge Birth Center, one of the many women's health services of Cambridge Health Alliance, opened its doors in December 1997. On Saturday, June 14, 2008, the Birth Center will mark its 10th anniversary as well as the 20th anniversary of the Cambridge Midwives.

The event will celebrate the natural processes of pregnancy and childbirth as the Center awaits the birth of its 1,000th baby. Among the featured speakers will be Christley Harris, Director of the Cambridge Birth Center; Tina Cassidy, author of the recent book Birth: The Surprising History of How We Are Born; Judy Norsigian, founder of Our Bodies Ourselves; and Marjorie Decker, Cambridge City Council member. The event will include children's activities and music from local jazz legend Stan Strickland and his group. It will open with a parade of Birth Center children, led by the first Birth Center baby, a ten-year-old boy. Light refreshments will be served.

The Cambridge Birth Center is one of only two free-standing birth centers remaining in Massachusetts. The center was created by the Cambridge Midwives and is operated through the Cambridge Health Alliance Department of OB/GYN and Women's Health. It is an option for women who would like to experience a more natural, homelike birthing experience.
