Somerville Health Foundation Announces Recipients of 2007 Community Funding

Somerville, MA……The Somerville Health Foundation (SHF) is proud to announce the recipients of this year’s community funding. Grants were awarded to the non-profit organizations that meet SHF’s priorities and criteria. The major priorities for this year’s grantees are to promote and support primary care services for all ages including education, research, and outreach. SHF also chose organizations that would help to improve delivery and accessibility of services to Somerville youths. SHF primarily chose recipients focused on reducing substance abuse in youths, organizations that are educating youths about violence, and groups that strive to improve mental health access and resources. Physical activity and nutrition programming were also chosen because of the prevalence of obesity in youths.

Nine non-profit organizations were funded for a total of $35,000, with awards ranging from $2,500 to $5,000. They are - Somerville Community Access Television, WalkBoston, SCM Community Transportation, Mystic Learning Center, Somerville Mental Health, Somerville Council on Aging, The Welcome Project, The Center for Teen Empowerment, and GroundWork Somerville.

The Somerville Health Foundation, a non-profit corporation, was founded in 1996 shortly after Cambridge Hospital and Somerville Hospital merged to form Cambridge Health Alliance. SHF is governed by a Board of Trustees of five persons including the Mayor of the City of Somerville, the Chairman of the Board of the Cambridge Public Health Commission or his designee, and three Somerville representatives selected annually by and from the Somerville representatives serving on the Commission Board. The current members are Mary Cassesso, Chairman, Nancy Busnach, Somerville Board of Trustee member and Vice Chair, Ruth Faris, Somerville Board of Trustee member, Frank Duehay, CHA Board of Trustees Chair, and Joseph A. Curtatone, Mayor, City of Somerville. The Foundation promotes and supports educational, research and outreach programs to improve the delivery and accessibility of primary care health services to the residents of the City of Somerville, MA.
