NEWS FROM CAMBRIDGE HEALTH ALLIANCE

February 22, 2007

NEW ARTICLE ALERT: MEDICAL EDUCATION REFORM
In today's issue (Dated: February 22, 2007) of the New England Journal of Medicine, an article in the Sounding Board section offers cutting-edge insights on medical education reform featuring Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) physicians, David A. Hirsh, MD, Instructor in Medicine, Harvard Medical School (HMS), and Barbara Ogur, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, HMS, first and second authors respectively.

Hirsh and Ogur rolled out the new HMS Integrated Clerkship program in July of 2004 which they continue to co-direct at CHA. The Integrated Clerkship model is a complete redesign of the principal clinical year in which students, in lieu of the monthly rotations of traditional clerkships, spend a year in a fully integrated program at CHA. In this method, which is being followed in several schools in the U.S. and Canada, students benefit from continuity of the care of their own patient panel, the continuity of relationships with experienced faculty mentors, and the opportunity to become familiar with and contribute to the healthcare delivery of one hospital system.

The program, developed by Hirsh and Ogur, was one of the first pilot projects in the ongoing Medical Education Reform Initiative at HMS. Drawing from their groundbreaking experiences in the Integrated Clerkship, a new model for clinical education, Hirsh and Ogur, together with HMS Professors, George E. Thibault, MD, the Daniel D. Federman, M.D. Professor of Medicine and Medical Education, and Malcolm Cox, MD, the Carl W. Walter Distinguished Professor of Medicine, put forth: "Continuity" as an Organizing Principle for Clinical Education Reform.

Authors: David A. Hirsh, MD, Barbara Ogur, MD, George E. Thibault, MD, and Malcolm Cox, MD
