NEWS FROM CAMBRIDGE HEALTH ALLIANCE

CAMBRIDGE HEALTH ALLIANCE'S NEW FAMILY MEDICINE PROGRAM RECEIVES ACCREDITATION

December 7, 2006

Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Medford, Revere, Somerville, Winthrop, MA…Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) today announced that its Family Medicine Residency program has earned accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The accreditation is an important component of CHA's plans to open a Family Medicine Center in Malden in 2007. The Family Medicine Center will be a cornerstone of a new multi-specialty healthcare center slated for 2007, and it will serve as a teaching site in Family Medicine for the Tufts University School of Medicine.

Randy Ellen Wertheimer, MD, CHA's Chief of Family Medicine, said, "Family Medicine is the only specialty where we are trained to care for multiple generations of family members. Cambridge Health Alliance offers a rich backdrop for practicing and teaching Family Medicine, and we are thrilled to commence our Malden residency program in 2007."

The ACGME is a private, non-profit organization that accredits approximately 8,200 residency programs in the United States educating about 103,000 residents. It was established in 1981 from a consensus in the academic medical community for an independent accrediting organization. Accreditation is voluntary, but programs must be accredited in order to receive federal Medicare funds for graduate medical education. Programs that are accredited substantial comply with the ACGME's standards for residency programs - both common standards that all programs must adhere to, as well as specialty-specific standards.

Cambridge Health Alliance is a regional healthcare system with three hospitals and more than twenty primary care practices in Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston's metro-North communities. Cambridge Health Alliance offers medical residency/training programs and undergraduate learning experiences in hospital and community settings. Cambridge Health Alliance also includes the Cambridge Public Health Department, CHA Physicians Organization (CHAPO), and Network Health, a managed Medicaid plan.
