NEW
BOOK BY CAMBRIDGE HEALTH ALLIANCE AUTHOR EXPLORES HOW INTERACTIVE
PLAY HELPS CHILDREN WITH AUTISM DISORDERS
Cambridge,
Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Medford, Revere, Somerville, Winthrop,
MA - Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) is celebrating Karen Levine,
PhD, on the release of her new book, Replays: Using Play to
Enhance Emotional and Behavioral Development for Children with Autism
Spectrum Disorders (Jessica Kingsley Publishers,
November 2006). Replays is co-authored by Naomi Chedd.
Incorporating
principles of play therapy as well as systematic desensitization,
Replays addresses the challenging behaviors often seen in
children with autism spectrum disorders. Replays guides parents
and professionals through the steps needed to help children access
their emotions and behavioral responses using playful and humorous
reenactment. The authors focus on a technique that involves adult-led
interactive symbolic play, which teaches children to master behavioral
challenges in different settings and situations.
"It's
important for children with autism spectrum disorders to practice
problematic experiences that lead to intense emotional responses,"
said Dr. Levine. "This book is written to be a supportive 'how
to' tool for parents, teachers, or counselors who interact with
and instruct children with autism."
Karen
Levine, PhD, is Clinical Director of Autism and Developmental
Disabilities at CHA's Center for Child and Adolescent Development
(www.challiance.org/ccad)
and an instructor in psychology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Levine
sees patients with autism and developmental disabilities for diagnostic,
therapeutic, and behavioral evaluations and treatment. She also
provides consultation to schools serving children with special needs
and has published many materials for parents and professionals.
Naomi Chedd is a licensed mental health counselor and holds a master's
degree in clinical mental health counseling. Chedd and Levine have
worked collaboratively with children diagnosed with autism and developmental
disabilities for the past eleven years. The two have partnered to
write several articles for families, therapists, and educators in
the field.
Cambridge
Health Alliance,

twenty primary care practices throughout Cambridge, Somerville,
and Boston's metro-North communities, is a teaching affiliate of
Harvard Medical School. It also includes the Cambridge Public Health
