Additional InformationI practice primary care pediatrics at Cambridge Pediatrics. I also have roles as the medical liaison for inpatient child and adolescent psychiatry and chair of the Pediatric Quality Improvement Committee.
During medical school, I was interested in international health as a potential career track and was trying to decide on a specialty that would lend itself to that work. When I did my pediatric clerkship at Children’s National Medical Center, everything came together. I found that I enjoy working with children and families over a long time and emphasizing prevention.
One aspect of working at Cambridge Health Alliance that I like best is the diversity of our patients. I have had patients from probably close to 50 countries from around the world of all socioeconomic levels. Thankfully, we have an outstanding medical interpreter service.
Aside from raising three of my own children with my wife, music has always been important to me. Around the time I started working at CHA, I also started taking guitar lessons. I also am an avid reader of historical fiction. Finally, my wife and I have a fourth ‘child,’ our Vizla, Wally (a Hungarian hunting dog).
My other special interest is the health of refugee populations. I currently serve as Medical Director of the Refugee and Immigrant Health Program for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and have conducted significant academic work with refugee populations, including the most extensive report on lead poisoning among refugee children in the U.S. and a nationwide study of the health status outcomes of the unaccompanied refugee minors known commonly as the “Lost Boys” of Sudan. Most recently, I have been on the board of directors of the Somali Development Center, a small organization in Jamaica Plain that provides supports to Somali and other African refugees.
