FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Where are we?
We are still in the same area of Somerville as in the early days,
but have moved just a few doors away to a cozy, renovated house
at 58 Beacon Street. We welcome you into our living room for interviews.
Is this going to cost you?
No! Whether you live just around the corner, or across the country,
we can help you with travel arrangements and expenses. If you live
in the Boston area, we can pay for a cab and/or provide you with
directions and a map to Somerville. If you are coming from farther
away, we'll put you up in a hotel nearby for two nights free of
charge (unless you prefer to stay with friends or relatives in the
area). We'll also pay up to $200 for your airline tickets if you
are flying. In the past year, we have had people from all over the
US come visit us!
We'll pay you!
As always, every participant, whether parent or young adult, is
paid for the time you spend interviewing with us. We now are able
to offer a stipend of $15 per hour.
What can you expect when you come into the office?
We are located on the second floor of a 2-story duplex near the
Cambridge/Somerville line. When you arrive, two of our staff will
be there to greet you.
You'll have a private, comfortable space to sit with your interviewer
to answer some questions. We will also ask you to fill out some
questionnaires on your own. And we always have tasty snacks on hand
during breaks. Last, but not least, you will receive a check for
your time with us.
What if you don't feel comfortable talking about something?
It is very important to us that families participate at whatever
level they feel comfortable. You can answer as many or as few questions
as you want.
Will we share the information we collect with anyone?
Only staff working on our project will have access to the information.
Even within our own office, interview materials are identified by
number, not by name. The links between names and numbers are kept
separate from the interview materials. We are very careful to protect
your privacy.
Can you get feedback after the visit?
This project is for research purposes and is not meant to be evaluative
in any way. There are no "better" or "worse"
answers. Any and all responses you give are unique to you and are
equally valued.
Can you give feedback about the visit, especially if you are
uncomfortable?
Yes! Your feedback is welcomed at anytime. You can share your thoughts
with us either during or after your visit, through a phone call
or letter.
If you have difficulty traveling to our office, is there an
alternative?
We recognize that for some of you it can be difficult to travel
to us. If coming to Somerville is not possible, we may be able to
arrange to come to visit you for the interviews.
