The Psychodynamic Research Clinic (PRC) offers psychodynamic therapy to members of the greater-Metro Boston community. It is based at Cambridge Health Alliance in the Department of Outpatient Psychiatry.
Patients accepted into the Clinic will receive psychodynamic psychotherapy once or twice per week without cost in exchange for helping us study the effectiveness of the therapy and mechanisms of change. The clinic is staffed by psychology interns, social work trainees, psychiatry residents, and also by senior psychologists, social workers, and psychiatrists who serve as clinical supervisors. The clinic is co-directed by Drs. Marshall Forstein and Kimberlyn Leary.
Psychodynamic therapy is a set of therapeutic methods that helps people develop insight about their problems and patterns as they relate to family history and the experience of growing up. People receiving psychodynamic therapy are often able to learn from these patterns and change their lives for the better. PRC clinicians work with participants as collaborative partners throughout the process of therapy to help patients reflect on their experiences, observe psychological defenses, and learn from themes pertaining to the past as they affect daily life, including in the therapy relationship.
In exchange for receiving psychodynamic therapy without a fee, patients agree to participate in the PRC's research program. This means you will complete online questionnaires at multiple points throughout therapy.
We will ask for your permission to audio-record sessions for training and research purposes, but this is optional. All data is kept secure and strictly confidential. Research findings are reported in aggregate form for the entire participant population only. The main goal of this research is to study how best to teach and train therapists to help patients know themselves and change their lives for the better.
If you begin therapy now, your therapy can continue through June 30, 2013. If at the end of therapy you seek additional therapeutic resources, we will refer you to other resources at or outside of Cambridge Health Alliance.
