CHA Chief Resident Nominated for Schwartz Center Compassionate Caregiver Award
Posted Date: 11/14/2013
Rachael Bedard, MD, a chief resident in CHA's Internal Medicine residency, is one of five finalists selected for the prestigious Schwartz Center Compassionate Caregiver Award presented by the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare.

The award was established in 1999 to honor healthcare professionals who demonstrate extraordinary compassion in caring for patients and families. CHA’s Haitian Mental Health Team won the award in 2010.

"Rachael stands out among physicians for her kindness to her patients and their families, her openness and attention to feeling, and her respect for all people and the diversity of experiences that shape them,” said Maren Batalden, MD, MPH, CHA's senior director of inpatient quality, and Elizabeth Gaufberg, MD, MPH, director of professional development, who nominated her. “Her special passion is for people on the margins – people who wrestle with poverty, mental illness, drugs, and alcohol – people that many health care providers label ‘difficult.’” Additionally, they noted that Dr. Bedard is a gifted leader and a “genius for creating community” who approaches every day with a palpable enthusiasm for life, work, and people.

The award recipient will be announced on Thursday, November 21, during the 18th Annual Kenneth B. Schwartz Compassionate Healthcare Dinner at the Boston Convention Center.
