Cambridge, MA…In celebration of World Breastfeeding Week, Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) will host a family event on Friday, August 3, 2012, from 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm at CHA’s Cambridge Hospital campus, located at 1493 Cambridge St. in Cambridge. The annual event, which is free and open to the public, honors mothers and babies, offering information and support to breastfeeding mothers and their infants.
Various community organizations that help breastfeeding moms and families will be on hand to answer questions, including Centro Latino, Agenda for Children, Somerville Early Head Start, and Cambridge Center for Families. Registered dietitians from CHA and WIC will also be available to provide nutrition tips. The event will include refreshments and door prizes, and guests are encouraged to bring their best breastfeeding photos for a chance to win an exclusive gift pack.
Health organizations worldwide agree that breastfeeding is the normal method of infant feeding, except in cases of certain diseases and medications. Breast milk offers numerous immunological and psychological benefits which cannot be offered through manufactured infant formula, such as optimal nutrition and brain development, protection against diarrhea, and reduced risk of diabetes. For mothers, breastfeeding helps reduce risk of certain cancers and helps with infant bonding.
